Compare IRATA CoursesHow the IRATA Scheme Works
Three levels, each a five-day course comprising four days of training and one day of independent assessment by an assessor who was not involved in the training. Certificates last three years.
Progression is gated by logged hours rather than by ability. Level 2 requires a thousand hours of IRATA rope access work and twelve months at Level 1; Level 3 requires the same again from Level 2. Logbooks are examined in detail at assessment, and candidates arriving with insufficient hours are turned away.
What Each Level Adds
- Level 1: equipment inspection, ascent, descent, changeovers, deviations, basic rescue
- Level 1: work under the direct supervision of a Level 3
- Level 2: advanced rigging, re-anchors, rope transfers, aid climbing
- Level 2: complex rescues including from mid-transfer and aid climb
- Level 2: hauling and lowering systems
- Level 3: team supervision and site responsibility
- Level 3: rigging sign-off and rescue planning
- Level 3: legislation, risk assessment and method statements in depth
- All levels: independent assessment on the final day
- All levels: certification valid for three years
Checking a Provider
- Verify membership. IRATA publishes its member companies. Check the provider appears on the association's own list rather than relying on a logo on a website.
- Ask about instructor ratios. Rope time per candidate is what determines whether the skills are usable afterwards.
- Confirm what the fee includes. Assessment fee, IRATA registration, equipment hire and logbook are the items most often excluded.
- Check assessment independence. The assessor must not have trained the candidate.
- Ask about the pass policy. Some providers include a re-training and re-assessment attempt; others charge again.

Compare ProvidersSafety and Compliance
Accreditation claims should be verified rather than assumed. IRATA maintains a public list of member companies, and a training provider must be an IRATA member company to deliver the scheme. If a provider's accreditation cannot be confirmed with the association itself, the certificate may not be recognised by the employers you are training for.
This website makes no accreditation claim of its own. Any accreditation belongs to the individual training provider and should be checked directly with IRATA before you pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does IRATA training cost in Cape Town?
Level 1 commonly runs R11,000 to R18,000 for the five-day course, Level 2 R12,000 to R19,000 and Level 3 R14,000 to R22,000. Revalidation is typically R8,500 to R14,000. These are indicative market ranges rather than quotations.
Is this website an IRATA training provider?
No. This site is not accredited by IRATA and does not deliver training. It helps you find and compare training companies in the Cape Town area, and any accreditation claim belongs to the individual provider and should be verified with IRATA directly.
How do I check a provider is genuinely IRATA accredited?
IRATA publishes its member companies. Check the provider appears on the association's own list rather than relying on a logo on a website, and confirm the accreditation covers the level you are booking.
How long does IRATA Level 1 take?
Five days: four days of training followed by an independent assessment day. Candidates must be at least eighteen, medically fit and reasonably physically capable. No prior rope experience is required.
Can I go straight to Level 2 or 3?
No. Each level requires a thousand logged hours of IRATA rope access work and twelve months at the previous level. Logbooks are examined in detail at assessment, and candidates with insufficient hours are turned away.
How long is IRATA certification valid?
Three years. Revalidation is a shorter course, typically three days. Allowing a certificate to lapse well beyond expiry can mean repeating the full course at that level.
Does IRATA certification work internationally?
Yes, that is its main advantage. IRATA is recognised globally and is the qualification most offshore operators and international contractors require, which is why it costs considerably more than locally accredited alternatives.
